Discussions with Devane

Mission: 01-Crossing the Line
Location: Captain’s Ready Room
Timeline: MD01-0100Hours

Etan paced behind his desk. He had been on hold with Starfleet Command for the better part of a half hour. He had been passed around from yeoman to yeoman about six times. His patience were wearing thin, but this was important.

He picked up a cup of coffee from the previous day and took a sniff. With a shrug he took a sip. It was probably the only coffee he’d get for some time.

Finally his screen flickered and the crest of Starfleet Command filled the screen. Etan sat quickly in front of the screen.

"Captain Kaz," Niamh's voice was calm as she spoke. "I apologise it's taken so long for you to get to me, I understand you've bounced about a bit. What can I do for you?"

Etan didn’t take the apology as sincere. K-17 had a reputation and that meant he was a low priority communication. “We have a developing situation here Admiral. A convoy of Tzenkethi ships are on a direct course for the station. We haven’t had any other indications of invasion or expansion before this. We need backup.” There was a hint of panic to his words, despite attempting to keep professional. “Is anyone in a reasonable range?”

Niamh's brow furrowed in concern. This wasn't good news at all. "We've had a string of incidents involving unrest on the Cardassian border and ongoing attacks from Romulan factions, ships are light on at the moment," she said as she tapped at the console on her desk, bringing up ship movements in the region of Deep Space K-17. "What kind of time frame are we looking at for the Tzenkethi incursion?"

Etan exhaled and looked at his readouts. “Less than seven hours.” He looked at the woman’s face on the screen and then looked down at his desk. “If we have to we can evacuate in that time, or try to. Most of our attached shuttles should be space worthy.”

The Admiral closed her eyes for a moment, pressing fingertips to her temples. "I have a Raven class, the USS Cardinal, a few hours away from you and already headed in your general direction, but given the size of ship and crew I doubt they'll be of any assistance," she said after opening her eyes again and looking at the screen. It looks like I can have a Monarch class there about the same time."

She pursed her lips and shook her head slightly. "The Jackal is on maneuvers, I can redirect them to K-17, but their arrival will put them solidly in the 8 to 10 hours range." Leaning forward, an elbow rested on the edge of the desk, fingers against her lips as she studied the maps carefully. "What kind of force are they bringing? How many ships do you anticipate you might need?"

Kaz returned his attention to his antiquated readouts. “We’ve got 10 shuk-din class cruisers on our sensors, and no attached vessels except a few shuttles that can get to Warp 5 at best.” He said. “Maybe a bit of a presence could send the message. A few ships patrolling you know?”

Niamh sighed. "Captain Kaz, I'll do what I can, I'll get you what I can, but I can't make any great promises. Our resources are already stretched, but I'll try, you have my word. Stand by, I'll get back to you as soon as I can."

“Thank you Admiral.” Kaz sighed slightly. “I look forward to it. Kaz out.” He terminated the channel and began to think. With his staff at work, he wanted to formulate some kind of contingency in case total evacuation became warranted.
